Vocalist and composer Julia Ehninger challenges traditional repertoire boundaries. With her arresting stage presence, Ms. Ehninger connects with audiences, drawing people in from the first notes. Her warm, nimble voice and expansive musical tastes have led her to explore electronic music, jazz standards as well as pop and experimental music.
Julia Ehninger holds a PhD in music education and was a scholarship holder of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes). She was enrolled in the jazz performance program at Manhattan School of Music where she studied with Gretchen Parlato and Theo Bleckmann and was supported by a DAAD-scholarship. She was also a scholar of the Foundation of German Business and studied jazz performance and music education at the Liszt School of Music Weimar and at the State University of Music and the Performing Arts in Stuttgart, Germany.
In her artistic work, Ms. Ehninger has recently dedicated herself to interdisciplinary, electronic and digital projects. Together with the Viennese author Jonas Schneider, she created the reading "The Discovery of Loneliness," in which scientific findings of psychological research on loneliness are dealt with through literature and music. With the support of Goethe Institute, she composed the song cycle "Tale of Colors" in 2022 in a virtual cooperation with the Portuguese composer Sara Ross.
In fall 2022, Julia released the debut album with her project HIMOYA on Berthold Records. Striving for authentic musical expression, HIMOYA combine elements of jazz and electronic pop music. In 2020, Julia published "Freedom of Flight" with her crossover band FRIDA on Jazzsick Records. Ms. Ehninger has also released the albums "Hidden Place" and "Im Wandel" with her jazz quartet.
Ms. Ehninger has performed at numerous clubs and festivals throughout Europe and the United States. Her performances include concerts at Carnegie Hall New York, A-Trane Berlin, JazzOpen Stuttgart as well as big band tours of Abu Dhabi, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic.
Die Sängerin Julia Ehninger lotet seit vielen Jahren die traditionellen Genregrenzen des Jazz aus. Sie versucht viel, erreicht noch mehr, erprobt mutig neue Pfade und zieht ihre Zuhörerinnen und Zuhörer mit ihrer warmen und beweglichen Stimme von der ersten Minute in den Bann. In ihrer langjährigen Laufbahn hat sie sich mit Jazzstandards, Pop, elektronischer und experimenteller Musik auseinandergesetzt.
In ihrer künstlerischen Arbeit widmet sich Frau Ehninger in letzter Zeit verstärkt interdisziplinären, elektronischen und digitalen Projekten. Gemeinsam mit dem Wiener Autor Jonas Schneider konzipierte sie die Lesung mit Musik "Die Entdeckung der Einsamkeit", in der wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse der psychologischen Einsamkeitsforschung literarisch und musikalisch verarbeitet werden. Mit Unterstützung des Goethe-Instituts hat sie 2022 in einer virtuellen Kooperation mit der portugiesischen Komponistin Sara Ross den Songzyklus "Tale of Colors" komponiert.
Im Herbst 2022 hat Julia Ehninger das Debütalbum mit ihrem Projekt HIMOYA bei Berthold Records veröffentlicht. Zu ihren Auftritten gehören Konzerte in der Carnegie Hall in New York, dem A-Trane in Berlin, JazzOpen in Stuttgart und der Jazzahead in Bremen. Tourneen führen sie nach Abu Dhabi, Ecuador und die Dominikanische Republik.
Ehninger studierte an den Musikhochschulen Weimar und Stuttgart und ging anschließend nach New York, wo sie an der Manhattan School of Music von Gretchen Parlato und Theo Bleckmann unterrichtet wurde. Sie war Stipendiatin der Stiftung der Deutschen Wirtschaft und wurde mit einem Stipendium des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD) und der Anna Ruths Stiftung ausgezeichnet. 2022 schloss sie ihre Promotion im Fach Musikpädagogik als Stipendiatin der Stiftung des deutschen Volkes an der Universität zu Köln ab.
